The German photo artist Anja Jensen (b. 1966) reflects on the scenario of surveilling and being surveilled in her photographic works and installations. Since 2001 the artist has been staging uncanny scenes in real places in natural or urban environments which, set at dusk or cast in the glow of artificial light, border on voyeurism and criminological surveillance.
As part of the exhibition Crime Scene, which ran from 23 September 2012 until 13 January 2013 at the Museum Kunst der Westküste, Anja Jensen showed photographic works that she created since 2006 during multiple stays on the islands of Föhr and Amrum. The artist had previously selected various beach and port settings as magical scenes for works in which she manages to capture the imagination of viewers by staging furtive actions and uncanny places. She picks islanders as actors and actresses and draws inspiration for her art from their life stories or their everyday living environments.
