Rasmus Collection Welcome to the MKdW!

18. February 2024 to 26. May 2024

More than 50 exquisite paintings and works on paper from the Jürgen and Maria Elisabeth Rasmus Foundation have made their way into the MKdW’s collection in the form of long-term loans. These works by Paul Baum, Tina Blau, Hans Peter Feddersen, Louis Gurlitt, Christian Morgenstern, Emil Nolde, Amelie Ruths and many others complement the MKdW’s collection profile, which is focused on artworks that deal with the theme of “Sea & Coast” and were created along the west coasts of Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands between 1830 and 1930.

How did the way people look at the west coast change? Which themes became important? In their pictures these artists observed distinctive geographic and climatic features and developed a fascinating range of themes: from the wind-whipped rocky coasts of Norway to the lofty skies of the North Frisian marsh – icy cold and shimmering air, distant and native regions.

Paul Baum’s paintings deserve particular attention: he came into contact with French neo-impressionism early on, and the works he created in the Netherlands represent an important position in classic modern art.

A richly illustrated catalogue featuring contributions by Pia Littmann, Ulrich Schulte-Wülwer, Simone Wiechers and Ulrike Wolff-Thomsen will be published to accompany the exhibition.
